Mission: Neuroscientific research
in Magdeburg

Decades of cutting-edge research have put Magdeburg on the map of places-to-be for world-class neuroscience. With a topical focus on memory and learning, brain plasticity, neuromodulation and cognition, the local neuroscience community covers (sub-) cellular, molecular, physiological and clinical levels of research, from animal model to human patient.

The CBBS acts as the umbrella of neuroscientific research in Magdeburg. By operating methodological and technological platforms, it has provided a unifying force that strengthened collaborations across basic science, clinical research and industrial applications, since its foundation in 2007.

While, structurally, the CBBS is a unit at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU), it is a scientific joint venture between OVGU and Leibniz-Institute for Neurobiology (LIN), currently comprising 107 neuroscientists across 7 faculties at OVGU, LIN and the center for neurodegenerative diseases (DZNE). It is also the main hub for administrating state funding for excellent neuroscience research and receives funding from the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Besides coordinating neuroscientific research across institutions, the CBBS was created to foster excellent early-career researchers, by providing them early on with scientific freedom to develop their own research profile.
